The City of Kirkland is dedicated to improving transportation safety for everyone - whether you walk, bike, drive, or roll. To support this effort, we are developing a Safety Action Plan (SAP) that will help us make data-driven decisions to enhance road safety.
What is a SAP?
The SAP aims to reduce fatal and serious-injury crashes affecting all roadway users by analyzing data to determine roadway problems and identify potential safety projects. We also want your input! Your feedback will help shape future safety decisions.
Why are we collecting speed data?
As part of the SAP, we will be gathering speed data on major roads (arterials and collectors) throughout Kirkland. This information will help us update the Kirkland Speed Limit Policy and ensure our streets are safe for all users.
What is operating speed?
Based on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the operating speed is the speed where vehicles are observed operating during free flow conditions. Simply put, operating speed is the speed at which most drivers naturally travel when roads are clear of traffic signals and congestion. This helps us understand how people use our roads and where adjustments might be needed.
Which roads are being studied?
This year, we are reviewing speeds on arterials and collectors across Kirkland. We’re using a data-driven and community-focused approach to determine the safest and most appropriate speed limits. Check out the map below to see the study areas!
How is this project funded?
The City of Kirkland received Federal Grant funding through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program.
How can you get involved?
Join us in person – We’ll be hosting community events this spring. Stay tuned on this page for dates and locations.
Share your thoughts online – Use our interactive map below to leave comments and suggestions about areas you think need safety improvements.
Together, we can make Kirkland’s streets safer for everyone. Thank you for being part of this important effort!
