What is a TSAP?
A Transportation Safety Action Plan (TSAP) is an essential tool for improving roadway safety. The goal of the plan is to reduce and eliminate deaths and serious injuries on roads. TSAPs use data, such as recent crash history and public feedback, to identify safety problems, and then find potential projects that address those safety problems. The framework for a TSAP is guided by the Safe System Approach, which is the foundational approach for improving roadway safety in the United States.
Why do we need a TSAP?
The TSAP is required for local agencies to compete for grants that fund roadway safety projects.
- State funding is available from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Info on WSDOT’s City Safety Program can be found on this webpage.
- Federal funding is available from the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant program. Info on SS4A can be found on this webpage.
How can you help?
Creating a TSAP requires lots of data. We use crash history to identify safety problems, but crash history doesn’t create a complete picture of how safe it is to travel in Toppenish. We need people who live, work, and travel in Toppenish to tell us about their experiences on the roads. Public feedback is one of the most critical pieces of a TSAP.
