Class I Bicycle / Shared Use Path

Class 1 Bike Lane

  • One or two-way bike facility which is physically separated from the roadway
  • For two-way paths, generally 10-12’ wide with shoulders
  • Provides a high level of safety and comfort


Class II Bicycle Lanes

• Typically are 5-6’ in width & may or may not include a striped buffer between the bicyclist & motor vehicles

• Does not provide physical separation between bicyclists & motor vehicles

• Low cost to stripe & provides safety benefits when compared to no dedicated space for bicyclists


Class IV Bicycle Lanes

Typically 5-7’ in width with a 2-3’ buffer with raised elements separating bicyclists from traffic

• Higher cost & improved safety compared to Class II bike lanes

• The buffer for a Class IV bike lane can be customized to contribute the community feel of the corridor


Bike Boxes

• Boxes placed at intersections to provide dedicated space for bicyclists to make their turn movements from

• Improves visibility of bicyclists particularly where they conflict with turning vehicles

• Improves safety for bicyclists by providing dedicated space in high visibility locations
